Keep those lenses clean

Keeping your lenses in good condition is paramount to obtaining good photographs.  Always use the lens cap and for those with interchangeable lenses, remember about the rear lens cap when off camera.

By keeping a UV filter on your lens (see Digital Advent Calendar 2009 – Day 12 entry here) then you can leave the filter glass exposed to the daily elements rather than the actual lens optics.  If you scratch the UV filter, you simply change it which is much more cost effective than having to repair a lens with damaged optics.
